FINAL MODEL MAKING DAY

20070623--image001.jpg

This is what I have managed to finish for the tables. The only thing to do now is to wait for my printer to finish the printing for the rest of the night and loads of rehersal tomorrow.

I want to thank Katerina, Carrie, Kai and Sheng Fei for helping with the site model in the past two days. Lets hope I can present your labour well.

TOO CHEESY?

Before I put more light beams... hows these kind of effect? or do I just go for normal lit interior?

SITE RENDER - DAY & NIGHT

20070615--image001.jpg

20070615--image002.jpg
Still working on the night image, trying to achieve some light beam effect shooting up the sky. And the picture will be the same long landscape format like the day after photoshopping.

FIRST GLIMPSE OF CHAPTER 15

One of the plans in Cluster 3. Finally I've achieved what I wanted in the drawing style. This will be applied to two more plans and one section across the cluster.

Styles adopted to shade the line drawing.

Some of the site renderings done for diagraming how the residents of the cluster will relate back to the communal floors of the super block and surrounding site. A drawing to bring my 1st term's research in.

Result of playing with mental ray. The unit where the balcony will be photoshopped is pretty ok. Its just the white wash at the lower flats. Still figuring out the setting to make it better.

RENDER - UNDERSLUNG WITHOUT TERRACE

RENDER - COMMUNAL CORRIDOR

Although there's nothing exciting, this is the the first communal space that I have. I'll just play with light rays coming through the facade, casting patterns onto the floor and strips of interior lights going along the seams of the internal walls.

RENDER - FLAT WITH TERRACE

View setup before application of material and lighting.
Trying to capture both the internal space and exterior view which sandwich the terrace. I've widened the field of depth of the camera to accentuate the height of the block. Either the desert or LA city scape will be collaged onto the background.

RENDER - FLAT WITHOUT TERRACE

View setup before application of material and lighting.
No Terracing in this type of flat, but a great view vertically down into downtown LA because of the facade orientation.

RENDER - OVERSLUNG WITH TERRACE

View setup before application of material and lighting.
Apart from showing the series of flat with terracing, I am also trying to give a hint of the twisting effect derived from them.

This collage will be of a night shot, showing the quality of space within from the exterior.

DRAWING LIST FOR FLATS IN CLUSTER 3

I am trying to wrap uo the drawings that shows the strategy of generating the interior walls for the flats and their qualities, so that I can move on to other areas of the superblock. These will be done for tomorrow.

Drawing List:

1) Sectional Perspective Showing Lifestyle x 2
20070524--image004.jpg

Here's the short section across the cluster showing lifestyle of flats with and without terracing, which still requires some work. There's still the long section to be done.

2) Dynamic Orientation of Internal Walls
20070524--image002.jpg
20070524--image003.jpg
20070524--image001.jpg
I will continue to work on the perspective view, adjusting the transparency o shw the quality in side. Working along with this drawing will be a progressive section, with a cutting plane set at every 3 meters, showing the rhythm of the interior walls.

3)Plans of 34th, 35th, 36th storey

4)Renderings of the interior, showing light quality and material.

5)2 Different Facade System with the different glass panel sizes.

TS CHAPTER

Here are some of the slides I have been working for my technical studies. Its more of documenting the process I've gone through before arriving the current form.

MORE DETAIL TO SECTION

20070517--image013.jpg

Here is what I have so far for the section, 200 x 600mm primary floor beams with 200 x 200mm secondary beams angle bolted to them. The floor is made up of trapezoidal profiled steel floors with 100mm thk infill concrete. The internal wall partitions are made up of 12mm thick boards with metal studs at 800mm centre to centre, with acoustic partition and sealant. As for the ceiling, I couldn't think of what to do yet so I just added some false celiling panels hanging from the structure above.

Am still working on the glass but basically there are two systems. Facades flushing with the structure will be made out of isosilis (how to spell?) triangles of 2.4 wide by 3 m tall. Facades for the duplex seperating the interior from the terracing will be made of tempered glass with glass fins as support to reduce obstruction to views and daylighting. I will post more pictures later.

As for the drawing now, it may be unclear, so i will see if i could adopt thom mayne's drawing method where he stretches a part of the section into a to-scaled isometric detailing. And too I will have to integrate the quality of flats with some photoshopped plants.

SETTING UP FOR MY FINAL DRAWING

Looking at different monolithic architectural projects, be it conceptual or built, they usually have a drawing which contains the intention and concept of the architect.

Based on the geometry of my superblock, I have rendered a series of perspectival sections with the section plane rotating around the mid point of the site. Since each section cuts through different spaces, different information will be embedded in at the end of the year. Off my head, information of: circulation paths, lifestyle of different apartments, programmetic distribution, daylight illumination within the block, shadows casted around the site, detailing ... could all be inserted into the relavant sections. At the moment, I forsee it to be similar to FOA's Yokohamma Sea Terminal Drawings.

FACADE SUBDIVISION

Still in the process of working out the qualities within the flats, I have begun to look closer into the facade system. Based on the surface formed between the structures, the facade will be further subdivided by mullions which will support the glazings. As there are two types of surfaces present, there will be two different kinds of patterns based on the materiality of glass. Rectangular glass planes for flat surfaces (indicated blue) and Triangulated planes for curved surfaces (indicated in rainbow with red curving the most).

Anyone knows the right tool to subdivide a surface into standardized geometry??

SETTING UP FOR BANNER

This will be a huge site rendering in my portfolio, planning to print at 1260mm x 594mm.

Still deciding on the graphics on how to bleed the things onto the edges and what should be real and what should be fake.

DAYLIGHT ANALYSIS

There are a standard range of comfortable light level for different types of usage. Using the renderings obtained before, the lux level analysis will give a more precise logic on the placements of both internal walls and external facade.

LIGHT LEVELS IN OUT ENVIRONMENT (LUX)
Twilight = Below 750
Indoors at home = 200-500
Indoors at office = 400-700
Drafting room = 500-700

OUTDOORS
0555hrs = 750
0610hrs = 2500
0620hrs = 5000
0640hrs = 10000
1200hrs = 81000
1710hrs = 10000
1730hrs = 5000
1740hrs = 2500
1755hrs = 750

The following images are colour-coded illumination level of 36th storey at 1400hrs on 5th December. They are of the same time but in different representation style.

DAYLIGHT STUDY OF CLUSTER 3 (34th-36th Storey)

The internal walls for flat divisions are flushed against the orientation of structural components in order to form a fluid spatial expression. As for the facade, daylight study is done to define whether they will be flushed against the structures or set back from the edge according to the space usage and the comfortable lux level.

20070509--image003.jpg

The following series of images are the daylight penetration into the flats, on 5th December, between 0700hrs-1700hrs.
