Ticket from the airport to Roma Termini

Courtyard at the school

I just arrived to Rome this evening. Staying at British School at Rome.
The building is amazing, and food is awesome!
I will start exploring the ancient city tomorrow.
good nyte
here are examples with photos..

For the cover of my portfolio, I tried with a photo of my model etc... but it no work!
so... here is a version with rendering + some texts.
thx to my ms class.
so far, this is my favorite. what do u think?

pages from portfolio showing intersecting space of two flats...

i'm cutting my laser cutter model now!
3 more sheets to go!!!
i might be able to bring 'crazy exterior flat' model for the jury. yay
I'm trying to finish my laser cutter model... but,
1) the machine stopped working, then
2) AutoCAD cannot be open, and
3)2MZ is too busy at this time
well, here is my newest render of the "interior flat".
Although i set the render for 16 hours, it's still rough... I added emitter on four directions and other slits, but still, the room (should be) dark, so takes forever to render...

took me almost 7 hours to prepare the file..!!!!

here is my cnc superwall model.
which color should i paint?
white? pink? something else?

This flat is all about "inside"
Test renderings
.
Half of the flat (without a front wall)

Bathing, sleeping area (without a front wall)

Bathing + sleeping area (with walls.)

Inspired by Katerina's amaaaazing sections, I am also trying to draw a section of my flat.
the cutting line's through the pool (almost middle of the pool).
see how it goes.. well,, i'm going back to work on my light box flat now..

it WILL be completely solid from outside with slits.

I added more flats to the "groovy" flat so it doesn't look like it's floating anymore (i hope!)
Side1

Side2
Although it's rendered for 9 hrs, the size of the file was too big, and it's not smooth yet.
I am trying with 15 hours now.

I will collage them later.
After revising several different models, I finally have one organized flat, which will be very closed and have openings (slits) for the light to illuminate the space.
I hide the exterior walls to show the interior, but in the real life, it will look like a hexagonal box with few openings.
Now I have the major spatial organization, so I will work on the details (openings, floor dissolving to the walls etc). I am hoping to finish it by the end of the day (or really late...)
The black texts are indicating the program in the flat, and the green texts and lines are indication the light (where the light will be etc)

Collage will be updated later...

I got tired of modeling, so I was playing with collage.
something is still wrong...

never mind... without clouds looks more natural...
Original maxwell rendering
Time - 7 hours
Sample Level - 16.98 S.L.
L.A. Time - 18:00

Edited with Photoshop
1: no clouds in the sky

2: sky with clouds

Which one's better? How about the colors of the flat. Are they ok? any suggestions?
I will add people/ landscape of L.A. later on.
I installed Maxwell Render to my PowerBook (finally).
Yay, I can render while I'm working on modeling :)

I'm gonna edit the colors with photoshop, then collage them with figures etc...
Entire flat

Terrace view 2

so.. i worked on the terrace. it's bit difficult to tell how it works without people/ activity, so I will do that now (or tomorrow morning..)
instead of having one bench (in the first one), I tried to make it more for communal living area.
well... please wait for the collage. that will explain..

I have been reading some books, magazines etc... to capture the image of life in LA which helped me a lot to develop the "images" of my flat.
Then, I am still reworking on the roof terrace from the previous model; I am trying to make the space more active, interactive (socially) etc.. I have modeled few different ones and finally the one I am modeling currently will work the best. still in progress.. lots of stuff to be worked on.

livable?

headache from the screen...

I am trying to model two different flat types: one with exterior and interior with light tubes/ furniture etc..
Here is the exterior one still in progress (taking forever...)
The pool has different depth so some parts people can sit.
Maybe the surface of the pool inside of the flat can work as some other program?? (light fixture, shelving unit etc)
Still have problems with edges (how can i blend all the edges??)

I was practicing Rhino and how I can combine light structure and furniture.
The image is just a practice image, but hopefully I can finish one flat with crazy interior, and another one with crazy exterior tomorrow, laser cut them on Monday...
The school seriously needs another laser cutter...!!!

with details of openings.
I will take another photos with flashlight so I can see how the light comes through to the space and how it can illuminate certain programs in the flat.

The first one... it's been glued now

well... there are so many things to work on...

So, my 2nd laser cutter model is half done (I'll post the photo when i'm done...)
1/2 is already being cut, so hopefully i can finish up this one and another one tomorrow..
This time, the scale is 1:50. kinda big...

Here are some views of my first superflat model.
The lighting wasn't great,,, so I will take the photos again (also, they are not glued together yet)

I did my first laser cutter model for superflat.
BUT... I forgot to bring my camera to the school, so I will upload the images when I get back home...
So I have been working on the users, and here is one of the first development of conceptual flat which is more private than others (at this point...)
Most of the exterior walls are enclosed except for the area where openings are needed (ex. enterence etc...)

I am planning to do...
- finish 2 (or 3) laser cutter models (send file to 2MZ on Monday / Tuesday)
- plan/ section of these flats (more conceptual models)
(also for each prototype, define the users etc...)
Things to be considered...
- Who can these housing be for?
- For whom, and for what forms of life, are they intended?
- What values are involved in relation to private space, and also in relation to public space?
- Who are the subject?
- What references are involved?
For this Friday, I'm planning to do...
-do few more layers for the Superblock (with circulation).
-develop the programs for the intersecting space
-whatever I can do for superflat.
Just a test render of the roof terrace with figure to show how this space might be in the future.
* Stair - needs to be straight
* still have a lot of problems!!!

Here is my first trial of the roof terrace.
I tried to combine flatness, then becomes staircase, then becomes seating area, then back to the flat surface (staircase is also for another apartment attached to the one I am developing).
Still need a lot of work...

So,,, I am now making a new Hooke Park model with CNC machine (this time, double-sided!!)
All files are ready to go, but machine's not ready yet. I will keep update my new Hooke Park model.
One of the layers for CNC machine

Here are some new pages / works for portfolio including circulation and beginning of flat development.

test renderings.
1. Colored by layers

2. Circulation for one cell is highlighted.

The completed circulation for two layers.
Took a while to figure out,,, but hope it works.
I'll add more details on the drawings (ex. defining flats, show the path for few flats...)

So from Friday's tutorial, I have been trying several different ways of circulations, and this one seems working the best so far..

Test maxwell renderings of...
circulation (blue) and garden/terrace (green) on site

circulation (blue) and garden/terrace (green) on site

part of the superblock with circulation

Since yesterday, I have been developing the circulation of one set.
Now it's 90% finished (I hope).
(I also did another set before the one that I was working on yesterday so I can see the relationship of these sets)
It is done before Natasha's comment, but I think I can work on the "inbetween" layer later.
And now, I'm working on my flat.
Circulation for 6 layers (2 sets)

Circulation with cells

The prototype is taking longer... breaking the blue foam needs to be done slow and careful..

From yesterday's tutorial, I am revising the circulation of my superblock.
Now, instead of having "circulation layer" between two layers, I went back to my initial idea; surface of the cells become circulation and private/public garden/ terrace (depending on the location).

The white (and gray) layer is one layer, and green layer is the another one which is attached to the white layer. Orange planes show the circulation path (and it always connect to the public floor, dark blue part), and blue planes are private terrace/ public roof garden.
Based on the activity catalogue of the cells, I am creating two layers at the same time to see which area can be circulation or garden. In that sense, the cells always have connection to the ground level, and still, each layer interacts spatially.

This only shows the circulation.
So now, two layers are considered to be one set. Between each set, there are some "bridges" (shown in pink) to connect each set. The surface of the bridge becomes another extension of the circulation, and inside becomes extension of the private flat.
I will finish this today, and upload the latest one later.

For my superblock, instead of layering all the cells without any space in-between, I created a circulation core between two layers. The circulation also creates interesting spatial interaction, and now all apartments are connected to the ground floor.
